India’s music publishing industry is growing at a fast pace, mainly because of the rise of digital platforms. According to data from IPRS, Music Ally, and Music Business Worldwide, the industry earned ₹884 crore in 2022–23, which is a 2.5 times increase over the last three years. This shows how much the music business in India has changed with the shift to online platforms.

Online Platforms Lead the Way

Today, 66% of music publishing revenue comes from digital platforms. This includes platforms like YouTube, music streaming apps, and short video apps. These online sources are now more important than radio or retail when it comes to earning money from music.

Where the Music Gets Licensed

Here’s a look at which platforms are using music the most:

  • Streaming platforms: 71%
  • Short-form video platforms (like Reels, Shorts): 56%
  • Television channels: 12%
  • Radio stations: 1%
  • Retail outlets: Less than 1%

Many Artists Still Not Registered

Even though India has over 60,000 artists, only about 13,500 are officially registered. This means a lot of artists are still missing out on getting paid properly for their work. There’s a big opportunity here to help more artists register and benefit from publishing income.

Conclusion

The Indian music publishing scene is changing quickly, and digital platforms are leading this change. For artists, publishers, and platforms, this is the right time to work together and grow the industry. More awareness, easier registration, and better support can help more artists earn from their music.
